Aligning Expectations Across a District

Expectations are a crucial component of the MO SW-PBS framework. They help identify the desired replacement behaviors we expect from students while creating a consistent framework of language that informs teaching and feedback from adults. Viewed from a lens of district implementation, the alignment of these expectations across buildings within a district can support students through vertical alignment, skill growth, and transitions. Participants in this session will hear from exemplar-district teams that have worked to align expectations across their districts.

Opportunities to Respond — Promoting Teacher Moves and Accountable Talk

Back to school in 2022 for in-person learning — what could be better, you ask? Flipping classroom learning to target students’ Opportunities to Respond through Accountable Talk! In this session, participants will learn how an urban middle school targeted development opportunities around Accountable Talk to better support learning in the classroom. This was accomplished by actively engaging students through the sixth Effective Practice: Opportunities to Respond.

Creating Systems to Support Classroom Implementation

Teachers’ implementation of SW-PBS in classroom settings plays a critical role in the success of schoolwide and districtwide initiatives. In this session, participants will gain an understanding of how to apply data-based decision-making in a district-level professional-development system. Participants also will receive examples of models for two different professional-development strategies and associated outcomes.

The Power in Preschool

This session will take you through Green Hills Head Start’s journey to maintain a true implementation system of SW-PBS Tier 1 and Tier 2 as well as assist its travel into Tier 3 across demographics of nine counties, eight centers, and eight home visitors. Witness the how and why of our program’s continuing journey, and examine relevant data that drives our organization’s planning and coaching.

Setting Up Your Classroom for Success

If you are a new teacher or are looking to revamp your classroom management, this session is for you. Participants will learn about the Eight Effective Teaching and Learning Practices and how they impact and support effective classroom management. Through open dialogue and collaboration, you will have the opportunity to identify your classroom expectations, develop procedures, gather ideas on responding to both expected and unexpected behaviors, visualize the physical arrangement of your classroom, and determine how to incorporate all of this into your lesson plans.

Title

Data Collection and the Decision Process for Tier 2 Services

PRESENTERS: Brett Strauser, School Counselor, and Laura Kuhrts, Reading Interventionist, Southern Boone Middle School, Southern Boone County R-I School District

Descriptor

This session will provide an overview of how Southern Boone Middle School‘s Tier 2 team collects data and identifies students in need of Tier 2 intervention support. During this session, participants will learn a staff nomination process that has proven successful at the secondary level as well as how to conduct a data review, determine student placement, and collaborate as a Tier 2 team.

SESSION OUTCOMES:

  • Be able to identify data needed to effectively make decisions regarding students entering or already placed in Tier 2 services
  • Learn how to identify students through schoolwide data and create a staff-nomination process through a collaborative approach involving stakeholders (families, teachers, interventionists, and administrators).

In this session, participants will discover how the presenters conducted a book study on The 5 Love Languages of Children and how implementing its strategies has had a positive impact in the classroom. Come see how our SW-PBS practices have been enhanced based on the information we learned about our own students. Participants will learn how students express and receive love, implementation ideas and examples, pitfalls to avoid, and how to discover their own Love Language.

Alternatives to Suspension — Instructional Alternatives to Exclusionary Discipline

PRESENTER: Gordon Way, MO SW-PBS Web and Data Consultant, MU

This session is targeted toward building administrators and will provide an overview of why exclusionary discipline is often an ineffective and potentially harmful response to major unexpected behaviors. Participants will learn the principles of effective instructional alternatives to exclusionary discipline along with a variety of suspension alternatives that can be incorporated into a menu of responses to major office-managed behaviors.

SESSION OUTCOMES:

  • Understand the harmful and unintended consequences that a reliance on exclusionary discipline has on students
  • Learn the principles for designing or selecting instructional alternatives to exclusionary discipline
  • Receive a number of possible suspension alternatives
