Recognition Application

Purpose

The purpose of the MO SW-PBS Recognition Award of Excellence is three-fold:

  1. Reviewing the criteria provides schools and districts an opportunity to reflect on their progress implementing and sustaining SW-PBS
  2. The process identifies exemplar schools representing all grade configurations and demographic patterns
  3. It affords the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education an opportunity to recognize those schools that are implementing SW-PBS at an exemplary level.

Criteria are based on effective implementation of the essential components outlined by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (http://www.pbis.org). The criteria are intentionally set high. Each recognition level typically requires two to three years of intense work to achieve these criteria. These rigorous criteria and time requirements are necessary for schools to develop sustainable systems and practices, and to successfully implement these with staff and students. Indeed, many of the state’s most successful schools took a full year to prepare prior to implementing with students.

MO SW-PBS has identified three levels of recognition that correspond with each implementation tier. These are:

Bronze: Recognizes schools that implement with high quality at the universal (Tier 1) level.

Silver: Recognizes schools that implement with high quality at the universal (Tier 1) and targeted (Tier 2) levels.

Gold: Recognizes schools that implement with high quality at the universal (Tier 1), targeted (Tier 2) and intensive (Tier 3) levels.

Successful applicants will demonstrate superior performance in the following areas:

  • Use of data to direct instruction, problem solving and intervention efforts
  • Active use of creative and engaging recognition systems
  • Implementation of SW-PBS throughout the school environment
  • Systemic orientation of new students, parents and staff throughout the year
  • Active instruction for social and behavioral skills
