If you ask the students and teachers at Gerald Elementary what their favorite part of each week is, most of them will say, “Family Groups!” As schools reach the advanced tiers of PBIS, they are looking for ways to bring the school and community together. GES has created multi-age groups of students to help build positive relationships with students, their families, and the community. In this session, you will see what family groups look like at this Preschool-5th grade elementary building, how groups were formed, how it has affected relationships throughout the building and community, and brainstorm what this could look like for your school.

  • Attendees will learn how GES uses weekly family group meetings to build positive relationships, teach character, and serve the community.
  • Attendees will recognize the positive impact of connecting multi-age students across school settings.

Building Community through Social Skills with the SW-PBS Framework

In this presentation Lakeview Middle School will share activities, systems, and procedures to build community, within the classroom, and schoolwide. Time for collaboration will be provided to share and brainstorm community building plans that can be implemented in the fall. Samples of successful resources will be provided.

Why does student behavior break down during reading and writing instruction? How does a well managed classroom using the 8 effective teaching and learning practices impact literacy and behavior? Factors such as fluency, automaticity, executive functioning, and self regulation can impact a student’s ability to succeed in reading and writing tasks. Understanding Trauma in School

This session will provide attendees a basic overview of what trauma is, it’s effects on the brain and development, as well as what we can do as educators to provide a safe, supportive and calming environment to promote growth in students and families. Attendees will be given an opportunity to complete an ACEs assessment to provide insight on their own previous life experiences and how these could be impacting relationships and interactions with students and families. We will talk about and review trauma conscious/informed strategies that can be used in the classroom as well as practice a few.

SESSION OUTCOMES:

  • Attendees will be provided a basic overview and understanding of what trauma is, what could be a traumatic event/experience and the effects of trauma on the brain and development.
  • Attendees will be provided basic overview and understanding of what trauma might look like in your students, families or yourself.
  • Attendees will learn what traumatic responses are, as well as be provided some examples of trauma conscious/informed strategies to use with your classroom and school as a whole.

Foundation Building: Unveiling the Essentials for Crafting a SW-PBS Preschool – Rock Your Role

How does the SW-PBS system work for a special education preschool? This session will address how we adapted the information provided in Tier 1 and Tier 2 to benefit the youngest learners including some with special needs. Attendees will be introduced to various materials used by our district as well as our path to successful Tier 1 and Tier 2 implementation. Time will be used to problem solve various barriers in the beginning stages of implementation.

SESSION OUTCOMES:

  • Attendees will be able to identify basic needs to begin developing a Matrix for preschool/ECSE settings.
  • Attendees will learn strategies to increase staff participation in development and implementation of the Matrix for building wide fidelity.
