Middle school students crave positive social interactions. During this session, come learn how we created a system called Crews that has helped our students feel more connected to one another and their school community. This system has resulted in a reduction in office-discipline referrals, a rise in school spirit, and increased opportunities for positive peer interactions and student leadership.

MTSS at the Department of Mental Health’s Division of Developmental Disabilities

This interactive session will provide an overview of how the Missouri Department of Mental Health’s Division of Developmental Disabilities has implemented an MTSS approach when working with individuals with developmental disabilities along with community providers and stakeholders. Participants will be able to understand the commonalities between DMH’s community implementation and the approach that schools use when implementing MTSS.

Title

Excel for Beginners

PRESENTERS: Gordon Way, MO SW-PBS Web and Data Consultant, MU

Descriptor

Have you ever hyperventilated after opening a new Excel workbook? Would you like to create simple tools that quickly perform calculations? Then this session is for you! This make-and-take presentation will provide you with a brief overview of this powerful data tool from Microsoft. Come learn some basic formatting tricks and simple formulas. By the end of this session, you will be able to create a simple gradebook and/or a minor behavioral data-tracking tool. (The format is “I do, we do, you do,” so you will need to bring a device with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. While the session will focus on Excel, there is quite a bit of overlap with Google Sheets.)

SESSION OUTCOMES:

  • Be able to perform basic formatting and simple shortcuts using Excel
  • Learn to write simple formulas using Excel
  • Create a simple gradebook or minor behavior-tracking log

De-Escalation — Defusing Difficult Situations

Acting-out behavior by students manifests in ways that make both classroom management and academic success challenging. In this session, Managing the Cycle of Acting-Out Behavior in the Classroom by Geoffrey T. Colvin and Terrance M. Scott will be used to provide an understanding of acting-out behavior along with an explanation of how educators can intervene proactively in order to prevent or minimize behavioral issues.

#ObserveMe — Supporting Each Other and Growing Our Practices Through Peer Observations

What if students walked by teachers’ classrooms and saw signs outside the doors inviting in others to observe their teaching practices? What would this tell our students? #ObserveMe is a movement that encourages a growth mindset in which teachers observe one another during the school day and provide feedback specific to each teacher’s individual needs. Come explore how this process can work to enhance effective teaching and learning practices.

St. Charles West High School is brand new to the SW-PBS arena. We are not experts (yet!); but in this session, we will share our journey of learning about SW-PBS, building a Tier 1 team, and preparing for implementation. Behavior Goes Where Intervention Flows

Back to the Basics — Creating a Firm Foundation

This session is designed for administrators, coaches, and team members who are newer to SW-PBS. It will provide an overview of the essential components of SW-PBS through the lens of a suburban elementary school’s experiences. Participants will be engaged in the basics of Tier 1, teaching expectations, monitoring student progress, and making databased decisions. Come review examples of Tier 1 scenarios to gain real world expertise of Tier 1 in action. Walk away from this session feeling knowledgeable and ready to implement Tier 1.

  • Use matrices to see how universal expectations provide consistent expectations for everyone
  • Understand the eight essential components of SW-PBS and how they influence the systems and practices of schoolwide implementation

Title

School-Based Mental-Health Supports Across Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3

PRESENTERS: Kimberly Selders, Regional Coordinator (FACE School-Based Services), Boone County Schools Mental Health Coalition; and Sara Estrapala, Assistant Research Professor, MU

Descriptor

Supporting student mental health is a current focus for many districts, buildings, and educators. This session will provide an overview of how school mental-health supports align and integrate within MTSS and SW-PBS. Special emphasis will be given to school-based mental-health interventions at the Tier 2 level including interventions addressing social skills, externalizing behaviors, internalizing concerns, and emotion-regulation needs. Tier 3 services and considerations for these interventions also will be discussed.

SESSION OUTCOMES:

  • Learn how mental-health supports fit within MTSS
  • Discover ways schools can serve students with mild-to-moderate mental-health needs through Tier 2 interventions
  • Learn considerations for Tier 3 interventions when students show continued needs beyond Tier 2
