This presentation will describe specific approaches within SW-PBS implementation that address disproportionate discipline. We will explain disproportionate discipline, share national data and provide actionable guidance for SW-PBS teams.

Located in Port Huron, Michigan, Central Middle School eliminated its in-school suspension room and created a safe space for students to refocus and return to class. Building on the success of the equity pilot work, the Refocus Room is designed to provide grace to students who are struggling. Asset-based practices are used to create an inclusive environment that quickly reengages students in the learning process. Our goal is to move away from exclusionary practices linked to discipline disproportionality.

Sterling Elementary School’s SW-PBS journey began following a standstill we had with another behavior management program. Our data proved that the amount of time spent by students out of the classroom was detrimental. Additionally, teachers and staff felt overwhelming frustrations with student behavior. With new leadership, we shifted to evidence-based SW-PBS as the new norm for our culture. After three years of training with SW-PBS, we are excited to share our journey in overcoming cultural challenges within our school and how we continue to live our mission of #LearnGrowConnect.

In this session, administrators and coaches will learn successful ways to plan professional development around the Eight Effective Classroom Practices in order to create or sustain an SW-PBS framework.

This session will introduce self-monitoring as a Tier 2 strategy and will highlight I-Connect as a mobile application to be used in conjunction with resources available at pbismissouri.org. Watch video demonstrations of students with autism as they self-monitor to witness the potential of this intervention. We will discuss whom this intervention might best be suited for, which includes a range of students needing Tier 2 supports.

Learn how we continue to create school and community buy-in as we implement trauma-sensitive strategies. In this session, you will participate in a classroom meeting, create a self-care plan, explore student power plans, learn how to implement trauma-sensitive lessons and much more.

This session will explain how Bartley Elementary School took three different tiers and effectively made them into one SW-PBS school. We will take you through each tier and reveal some effective tips for a smooth-running program. Learn how we analyze our data and think outside the box to solve behavioral concerns. Also, see how we train our teachers throughout the year in order to ensure they are implementing SW-PBS with fidelity.
