Title

What’s the Purpose of Your Face: Communicating with Adolescents

Communicating with teens and pre-teens often leaves adults confused or with a feeing of “what just happened?” Did you know that a teens inconsistent ability to accurately read facial expressions can lead to many misunderstandings? Join this session to learn more about these areas of mass confusion as well as strategies that can be implemented to help in your communication with teens and pre-teens — both at school and at home! Learn these strategies while actively utilizing the Great 8 Classroom Practices.

  • Attendees will learn and utilize the B.R.I.E.F. strategy to increase the quality of conversations with adolescents.

Title

Welcome Back!: Two days of Engaging School-wide Activities to Start the New School Year Off Right

Starting a new school year can be difficult, especially for those middle school years. At SMS we have combined our beginning of the year SW-PBS procedures & expectations lessons with fun team-building activities to make the transition back to school a little easier–for all of us! Every staff member is included–not just our grade level teachers which helps build our school community. By building these relationships we’ve seen an increase in school pride and a decrease in ODRs. During this session we will share our schedule and some of the activities we’ve incorporated through the years. Although we are a 5-8 building, many of these activities could be modified for any level.

SESSION OUTCOMES:

  • Attendee will learn strategies to introduce and reinforce school-wide procedures and expectations based on their SW-PBS matrix in an engaging and meaningful way.
  • Attendee will gain strategies for incorporating relationship-building and skill-building into the transition to a new school year.

Strengthening MTSS Structures for Behavior

Boone Elementary had a change of leadership beginning the 23-24 school year, and we have worked over the course of the year to ensure that MTSS procedures specific to students identified to receive tier 2 and tier 3 behavior supports are consistent building wide, that we are monitoring the effectiveness of interventions, and that all staff are clear on the responsibilities specific to their role.

SESSION OUTCOMES:

  • Attendees will have a broad understanding of how our school solidified our Tier 2 and Tier 3 systems for MTSS Behavior over the course of the year with a new administrator.
  • Attendees will be able to use our experiences to examine their own systems for supporting tier 2 and tier 3 students behaviorally.
  • Attendees will identify specific actions our leadership team took to ensure that our procedures were consistent for implementation of interventions and data progress monitoring.
