Description

This course provides information for Tier 2 teams to develop a system for identifying students who may need additional support. Systematic early identification can be conducted in several different ways. No single method is likely to identify all students who may need Tier 2 support, therefore it is recommended that teams develop at least two methods. The goal of a student identification system is to have a clearly defined process that allows all students to be considered, promotes early identification of students who are at-risk for poor outcomes, and identifies youth who may be experiencing internalizing and/or externalizing concerns.

In this course, three methods will be presented – Teacher Nomination, the use of Existing School Data, and Universal Screening.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop a simple and brief Teacher Nomination form as a part of your systematic process to identify students at-risk.
  • Develop the logistics for your nomination process.
  • Determine proficient, at-risk, and high-risk criteria for academic and behavioral data currently collected in your school.
  • Determine specific criteria that trigger a referral to the Tier 2 Team.
  • Develop and implement a system to administer regular, periodic screening for social, emotional, and/or behavioral risk.

Prerequisites

This course is for Tier 2 teams in schools that are implementing Tier 1 with fidelity and are ready to consider planning Tier 2 systems, data, and practices.

Reflective Questions

Tier 2 interventions typically serve 10-15% of a student population.

  • How many student might you eventually be supporting with Tier 2 interventions?
  • How many students are enrolled in your school?
  • What is 10% of that number?
  • What is 15% of that number?
