Newly published research by Gage, Lewis, Johnson and Way (2024) validates what our partner schools and districts have know for years: schools that implement Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support (SW-PBS) with enough fidelity to earn any of the three Missouri Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support (MO SW-PBS) Awards of Excellence (Tier 1, Tier 2, or Tier 3) show statistically significant improved outcomes for students! Relying on longitudinal data that partner schools submit to MO SW-PBS, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), and the National Center on Educational Statistics (NCES), Gage, et al., demonstrated that schools that met criteria to earn an Award of Excellence levels had lower rates of exclusionary discipline, including office discipline referrals (ODRs), short term out of school suspension, and long term out of school suspension (10 or more days). This means that students spend more time in instructional settings.
The study is currently available on the “View Online First” page of the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions and will be published in the December 2024 issue.
