4. Selecting Function Based Interventions, Monitoring Student Progress, and Interpreting Data for Decisions

Component Purpose

The purpose of this component is to assist teams in developing a systematic process to determine the function of behavior and matching the intervention to the function. In addition, this component will assist teams in developing systems for interpreting data to determine whether the student is making adequate progress within a given intervention, whether the intervention needs to be modified or changed, and whether the student is ready to be faded or graduated  from an intervention. Finally, the component introduces several tools that can assist teams in collecting and monitoring data gathered on students receiving Tier 2 interventions. The resources on this page are intended to supplement MO SW-PBS regional Tier 2 training.

Component Outcomes

  • Develop an efficient and effective process for gathering and reviewing relevant student data.
  • Use student data to select function-based interventions that match the needs of identified students.
  • Explain the importance of monitoring student response to an intervention.
  • Describe why baseline data should be collected and list examples of data that can be reviewed to determine baseline levels of performance.
  • Establish a method for collecting and graphing student data.
  • Identify key elements within graphed data (current level of performance, desired level of performance, and trend line).
  • Interpret student response to intervention and make decisions based on data.
  • Establish procedures for generalization and maintenance.
  • Develop a method to access and review social validity.
  • Evaluate Program Outcomes.

Data  Tools

The Advanced Tiers Spreadsheet (ATS) is a tool that charts points for  the Tiers 2 and 3. Ideally suited for monitoring Check-in, Check-out, the ATS can be used for any intervention that monitors the number of occurrences of a behavior against the number of opportunities to  perform that behavior. Users can download the ATS as an Excel Spreadsheet, or they can access the ATS through Google Sheets.
