Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support (SW-PBS) is a proactive approach to put behavioral/social skills strategies in place for all students while also building in support for those at risk for and/or those who receive special education services.

Common Purpose and Approach

Feature Purpose:  Administration and at least 80% of staff agree to implement SW-PBS as a way to support students and staff. Commitment provides the buy-in necessary for implementation with fidelity.

Feature Outcomes: This means that the Components of SW-PBS are implemented by all staff with all students with sufficient intensity, integrity and consistency such that 80% or more of the students respond by consistently displaying expected behaviors.

Examples of Common Purpose Include:

•    Form a representative SW-PBS team and meet at least once monthly.
•    Team creates, reviews & revises annual Action Plan as appropriate
•    Collaborate with the entire staff to plan and implement SW-PBS.
•    Align Statement of Purpose with state/district mission statement.
•    Include commitment to improved social/behavioral/safety goals in School CSIP goals.
•    Involve family and community throughout planning and implementation.
•    Embed culturally responsive practices throughout planning and implementation.
•    Regularly review, revise and archive all documents, artifacts, data and agreements as needed.
•    Clearly articulate expected student and staff behaviors.
•    Develop and use common language throughout all Components

Form a representative SW-PBS team and meet at least once monthly

All MO SW-PBS consultants meet monthly utliizing team meeting norms that they collectively brainstormed, agreed upon and update annually. They post and refer to the meeting norms in order to promote efficient and effective team process.

Team creates, reviews and revises annual action plan as appropriate

The role of the Missouri Schoolwide PBS Leadership Team is to provide technical assistance, long-range planning and policy development for the state Positive Behavior Support initiative. The Leadership Team is responsible for the development and facilitation of annually updated action plan to promote a specific set of measurable outcomes. The current Action Plan Overview was updated and approved in November 2008.
