The purpose of this meeting is to form working groups across schools to address on-going challenges identified in the implementation of SW-PBS at the High School level. Outcomes of the Mo SW-PBS High School Forum include 1. Identifying successful practices for distribution among participating Missouri schools. 2. Identifying common on-gong challenges to shape regional trainings.
Participating teams should download the PBIS National Center High School Monograph and review recommendations to target for implementation during the 2010-11 school year. This event follows the SW-PBS Summer Institute and is intended for junior high and high school teams that have been implementing with students for at least one year. Space is limited, register now!

Perryville High School PBS makes the local newspaper (The Sun Times) twice in February 2010: first to celebrate demonstration of exceptional behavior by students and staff and a second time when a local business donates funds for the PBS initiative.U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan sent a letter to Chief State School Officers advising them to review their state polices on seclusion and restraint. Here is a brief excerpt from the letter suggesting a possible alternative to seclusion and restraint:
"Approximately 8,000 schools across the country are already implementing PBIS, a systems approach to establishing the social culture needed for schools to achieve social and academic gains while minimizing problem behavior for all children. PBIS provides a framework for decision making that guides the implementation of evidence-based academic and behavioral practices throughout the entire school, frequently resulting in significant reductions in office disciplinary referrals, suspensions, and expulsions. While the successful implementation of PBIS typically results in improved social and academic outcomes, it will not eliminate all behavior incidents in a school. However, PBIS is an important preventative approach that can increase the capacity of the school staff to support children with the most complex behavioral needs, thus reducing the instances that require intensive interventions"
Position Paper written by PBIS National Center Co-directors Rob Horner and George Sugai
Additional information and resources regarding Seclusion and Restraint can be found on the PBIS website.
