Criteria and Application

2007 Exemplar Schools

Thirty-five Missouri schools were recognized for effective practices at the second annual School-Wide Positive Behavior Support Summer Institute beginning June 25, 2007. The four-day meeting was held at the Holiday Inn Select-Executive Center, Columbia. More than 700 educators attended the training.

The institute was sponsored by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the University of Missouri Center for Positive Behavior Supports. Training was provided to school district personnel on strategies to use with students for prevention and intervention of problem behavior and maintenance of positive behavior. District teams were made up of administrators, counselors, and classroom and special education teachers.

Keynote speakers were Dr. George Sugai, professor of special education at the University of Connecticut and co-director of the National PBIS Center; and Dr. Tim Lewis, associate dean of the College of Education at the University of Missouri-Columbia and director of the MU Center for PBS. Heidi Atkins Lieberman, Missouri Assistant Commissioner for Special Education, presented the awards June 28. Each school received a certificate and banner.
